4 Tips for an Eco-Friendly Home Move

Nowadays, people are now becoming aware of multiple environmental issues. Everyone is doing their best in their own little ways to help lessen the environmental impact of their day-to-day activities. One activity that people might think is not possible to do in an eco-friendly way is home moving. But it does not mean that there are no ways to do so.

Are you one of the people who are planning to move and are concerned about its impact on the environment? Trying to do an eco-friendly home move but have no idea what to do?  If your answers to these questions are yes, then here are the tips we have gathered to help you in having an eco-friendly home move.

1. Declutter your belongings

First on the list is decluttering. This is the greatest opportunity for you to re-evaluate all your belongings. Removing the items you no longer want, or need will not only save your time and effort but also your money. Why? Having fewer items to bring when you move means you won’t need to spend much time packing things up. For the most part, you won’t need to use many boxes to pack your items, which helps save some boxes and most especially saves space on the moving truck.

If you plan to hire movers and packers in Dubai, you can save a lot when you have lesser items to move since you will only need lesser movers to assist you with your move.

Sell or donate unnecessary belongings

Once you finish decluttering, there are some belongings that are still in good condition that you don’t need anymore. You have an option to either sell or donate them.

You can organize a garage sale a few weekends before your move. This way, it would be easier to find new homes for your old belongings and at the same time make a few bucks for you to use for your home moves such as the fee for hiring movers in Sharjah or movers Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE.

On the other hand, if you don't have time to have a garage sale, you can donate these items to a charity rather than throwing these belongings away. This initiative can benefit people who are less fortunate in your community. You can get rid of those things before moving and at the same time, you are able to help some people in the community.

2. Discard any materials in an eco-friendly way

There are some materials that you need to discard properly such as hazardous substances you have kept in a safe place for a long time. These include gasoline, kerosene ammonia and acids. If you are moving to a new home, you need to keep in mind that you need to dispose of these items correctly. If you think these substances are still useful, you can offer them to a friend or neighbour if they want them. If not, you can contact a local waste disposal company for them to dispose of it for you.

Aside from those substances, you surely have some white goods and other materials that are no longer usable. These include paints, lighting, and batteries. Just like those substances, these items should also be disposed of accordingly.

3. Use eco-friendly moving boxes

Boxes are the most common items used when packing to secure your belongings. To make your move an eco-friendly one, you can use old boxes or bins available at home. Just make sure that those boxes are still sturdy enough. If you don’t have some, you may also try to ask friends or neighbours for pre-loved boxes. This way, you are recycling the old boxes and the good thing is you can save some money from buying new ones.

Alternatively, you can rent reusable plastic crates since these can be used a lot of times before they need to be reprocessed. These plastic crates are more durable than cardboard boxes which mean lesser chances of damaging any belongings you have during the move. It will also be easier for you to stack plastic crates in the moving truck since you can see what is inside of them.

Bubble wraps and foam peanuts are the two most common items used to protect the belongings inside the box throughout the moving journey. But you need to think twice about using these items as most of these materials are not environmentally friendly. You can find biodegradable packing peanuts as an alternative but it can cost you more.

Another sustainable alternative is by using packing paper. You can also use clothing materials that you have like your towels, blankets and clothes to protect your items, especially the fragile ones. You also need to pack these items anyway, so why not use them to protect your belongings? You can save money, space and of course the environment by doing so.

4. Hire eco-friendly movers and packers in UAE

A lot of moving companies are now aware of the possible effects of their business on the environment. Thus, there are numerous movers and packers who are now adapting to more environmentally friendly moving methods by having energy-efficient vehicles and of course, using reusable materials when packing. When searching for a moving company in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or anywhere in the UAE, make sure to check if they support sustainability.
